Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions you'll make while planning your big day. It sets the tone for your entire wedding—from location and décor to hotel accommodations and your overall vibe. If you're looking for a barn wedding venue near South Haven or Bangor, Michigan, let me introduce you to a space that completely stole my heart: Something Blue Berry Farm.

I first had the pleasure of shooting a wedding at Something Blue Berry Farm back in October 2022 for Nick & Megan’s beautiful fall celebration. As someone who adores fall weddings (hello, crisp air and golden light!), I was instantly enchanted by the seasonal beauty of the space. But beyond the charming barn and vibrant autumn colors, what truly made the day special was the people behind the venue.

A couple share a romantic embrace at sunset in a rustic outdoor setting with golden light streaming through the trees.

THE STORY BEHIND THE VENUE

When I arrived for the first time, I wasn’t super familiar with the layout—but that’s when I met Steve and Carolyn Rookus, along with Valerie, their incredible day-of coordinator. Steve was outside with their golden retrievers AND puppies (yes, actual puppies—talk about distraction overload for this dog mama!). From the first moments, it was clear this wasn’t just another venue—it was a space filled with heart.

Carolyn shared the story behind Something Blue Berry Farm: “Our daughter desired a barn venue and found a lack of venues nearby. We already lived on a farm with a barn that could be converted to a venue space. We also noticed most venues came with quite a few restrictions. We wanted to create a venue where a couple could make it their own by the vendors they chose and the vision they had. I never want people to come to the venue and see just our beautiful barn, but the space should reflect the couple they have come to celebrate.”

And when you ask Carolyn her favorite part of the wedding day? “The calm before the party begins.

Walking the reception barn and making last minute adjustments so the party is welcomed into the perfect space after the ceremony.

And always watching the groom see his bride coming down the aisle.”

Why I Love Photographing at Something Blue Berry Farm

Since that first wedding, I’ve had the joy of photographing weddings here in every season, and fall still has my heart. There’s just something about the way the sunlight streams through the barn doors as the couple shares their first dance—it’s nothing short of magic. I also LOVE heading up to the vendor alcove for wide shots of the dance floor below—it captures the joy of the celebration in such a fun and dynamic way.

One thing that stands out every single time is how much Carolyn, Steve, and Valerie care about their couples. Whether they’re helping move a ceremony from the woods to the barn because of unexpected flooding (oh, Michigan weather!), or gently guiding guests who arrive a little too early, they’re always stepping in to make sure everything runs smoothly.

I’ll never forget Carolyn telling me during my first visit, “Golden hour is the prettiest here—you’ll want to make time for it.” And let me tell you—she was absolutely right. Every time I’m back at Something Blue Berry Farm, I make sure my couples set aside time for golden hour portraits. The light is pure magic, and the photos speak for themselves.
