No matter how many times I photograph engagement sessions along the shoreline, I always find myself stopping for a moment and taking it all in—the sound of the waves, the endless horizon, the way the sunlight reflects across the water, and the feeling that for a moment, you could be anywhere in the world.
One of my favorite things about living and photographing couples in Michigan is having access to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Midwest. And while Michigan may not be the first place people think of when they imagine beach photos, I can confidently say that a Lake Michigan engagement session rivals some of the most beautiful coastal locations in the country.

Unlike many locations in Michigan, Lake Michigan faces west, which means the sun sets directly over the water.
As the evening progresses, the sky begins to transform into soft shades of gold, peach, pink, and blue. The light becomes softer, warmer, and incredibly flattering.
Don't Skip Blue Hour
Some of my favorite engagement photos have happened after the sun has already disappeared below the horizon.
Blue hour is the short window of time after sunset when the sky turns a deep blue and the beach becomes quiet and peaceful.

If you're dreaming of dramatic views, sweeping landscapes, and that feeling of standing on top of the world, Warren Dunes is hard to beat.
The towering sand dunes create incredible variety for engagement photos and make the location feel almost cinematic.

The combination of dunes, trees, and open beach creates a gallery that feels diverse without needing to travel between multiple locations.
I especially love Van Buren for couples who want a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere.
Deerlick Creek Beach
If you're looking for one of Southwest Michigan's hidden gems, Deerlick Creek is one of my favorites.
This location feels secluded, romantic, and untouched.
The natural landscape, dune grass, and shoreline create a soft, organic feel that photographs beautifully.
Because it's often less crowded than other beaches, couples can relax and fully enjoy the experience without feeling like they have an audience.
This location is especially beautiful during late summer and early fall.
South Haven
South Haven offers one of the most iconic Lake Michigan experiences.
The lighthouse, pier, beach, and waterfront atmosphere create a perfect blend of classic Michigan charm and coastal romance.
What I love most about South Haven is the variety.
