When it comes to your engagement session, it’s not just about taking pretty photos—it’s about creating an experience, building a connection, and capturing your love story in a way that feels real. Real moments, real laughs, real connection. Between you and your partner, and also with me.
As a documentary-style photographer based in Kalamazoo, traveling often to Grand Rapids, Lansing, and all over beautiful Southwest Michigan, my goal is always to create an atmosphere where you feel relaxed, not posed. My style is less hands-on and more about guiding you with fun, silly, and heartfelt prompts that make you forget there’s even a camera around.
Does that mean I won’t help if you’re feeling a little awkward or don’t know what to do with your hands (because let’s be honest, we’ve ALL been there)? Absolutely not! That’s exactly what this blog is for—I'm sharing my 5 go-to engagement prompts that help you warm up, loosen up, and get ready to shine in front of the camera.
The Frolic (aka Light Jog or “Running” Shots)
Okay, don’t panic when I say “running.” I don’t mean you’re training for a marathon here! We’ll start with a light jog or a playful frolic—holding hands and moving toward the camera while looking at each other. It’s all about motion, laughter, and focusing on your partner—not me. This is such a great icebreaker and sets the tone for the rest of our session.

The Airplane Game ✈️
This one is always a favorite—and a little ridiculous (in the BEST way). You’ll intertwine your fingers and arms to create your own little “airplane wings” and swirl around together, ending in a sweet snuggle or a surprise kiss. You’ll probably laugh at how silly it feels—but that’s the point! Silly = natural smiles = heartfelt, real photos.

The Drunk Walk & Hip Bumps
This one is for my goofy couples (and the grooms LOVE it). You’ll do your best “drunk walk” while bumping hips down a path or field. Every time your partner bumps you, they’ve got to catch you! It brings out the best giggles, real movement, and playful energy. I promise—you’ll forget you were ever nervous.

Surprise Bear Hug from Behind
I’ll set one of you up just ahead, and then the other will run up behind and give a big ol’ bear hug. You never know if you’re about to be lifted up, twirled around, or just pulled into a tight snuggle—but it always ends in kisses and laughter! The unpredictability of this one keeps it fun, genuine, and oh-so-romantic.

The Fireman Carry (With a Twist)
Now THIS one is a crowd favorite! Your partner scoops you up fireman-style, and I capture the giggles, twirls, kisses—and THEN, I say: “Okay, on the count of 3… pretend like you’re going to drop her!” 😆 I’ve had grooms high-five me after this prompt because the reactions are SO priceless. Don’t worry ladies—I get them back later at the wedding with a groomsmen lift of their own.

All of these prompts are how we start the session. They help shake off the nerves and get us moving naturally before we slowly ease into more romantic and intimate moments. Sometimes we need visual inspiration (hello, Pinterest girls!) and that’s okay—whatever helps you feel more confident and excited about your session.
